Interceptive Treatment for Periodontal Disease

Periodontal Disease Treatment
Interceptive periodontal treatment is designed to protect patients who are at an increased risk for developing gum disease. Several factors affect a person’s risk for developing gum disease, including smoking, genetics, certain systemic diseases, and a history of prior gum disease. In these cases, dentists may recommend beginning an interceptive treatment plan designed to halt periodontal disease before it has a chance to cause gum, bone, or tooth loss.

Patients undergoing interceptive periodontal treatment may need to visit the dentist more frequently than twice per year. In fact, many visit quarterly for exams and dental cleanings. During these visits, the gums are inspected for signs of disease, which include gum recession, redness, inflammation, and the formation of pockets around the teeth. If an exam reveals signs of disease activity, the dentist may administer medication to periodontal pockets to help eliminate bacteria. Laser periodontal therapy and scaling and root planing may also be necessary to treat active periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease is a chronic condition in most patients. It is present in approximately 8 out of 10 American adults – many of whom are unaware of the condition. Once diagnosed and treated for gingivitis or periodontitis, a patient is much more likely to develop the conditions again in the future. In its earliest stages, periodontal disease causes very little or no symptoms. It is during this time that interceptive treatment is most important and effective. If you have a history of gum disease or have any elevated risk factors, interceptive periodontal treatment may be right for you.
